About Diwali
Diwali, the festival of lights, falls on the new-moon night of the Hindu month of Kartika, so its date in the Western calendar moves between mid-October and mid-November. The dates on this page are for India; communities abroad sometimes celebrate a day earlier or later depending on the local moon timing.
The main day, when Lakshmi Puja is performed, sits in the middle of a five-day festival that starts with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Dooj.
A Short History
For many Hindus, Diwali celebrates Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile and his victory over Ravana, when the city lit rows of oil lamps (diyas) to welcome him. Others honor Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, or Krishna's defeat of the demon Narakasura. Jains mark the nirvana of Mahavira on the same night, and Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas, the release of Guru Hargobind from imprisonment.

Diwali FAQ
What day of the week is Diwali 2026?
Diwali 2026 is on a Sunday: Sunday, November 8, 2026. The following year it falls on Friday, October 29, 2027.
Why does the Diwali date change every year?
Diwali follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar. It is held on the Amavasya (new moon) of Kartika, and a lunar month does not line up with the Gregorian calendar, so the date shifts by up to a month.
What are the five days of Diwali?
Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Diwali with Lakshmi Puja, Govardhan Puja, and Bhai Dooj.
Is the Diwali date the same outside India?
Usually, but not always. The festival depends on when the new-moon tithi falls in local time, so in the Americas it is sometimes observed a day earlier than in India. Check your local temple calendar if the exact day matters.
