About Halloween
Halloween is October 31 every year, the evening before All Saints' Day. Trick-or-treating usually happens that evening, so whether it lands on a school night or a weekend shapes how people celebrate.
The countdown ends at the start of October 31 in your time zone, giving you the full day for costumes, pumpkins and parties.
A Short History
Halloween grew out of Samhain, a Celtic festival that marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter, when the boundary with the spirit world was believed to grow thin. In the 8th century Pope Gregory III moved All Saints' Day to November 1, and the night before became All Hallows' Eve. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the customs to North America, swapping carved turnips for pumpkins, and trick-or-treating spread across the United States in the 1930s to 1950s.
