About Easter
Easter Sunday moves every year between March 22 and April 25. Western churches set it as the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that falls on or after March 21, and this page uses that same calculation.
Because Good Friday and Easter Monday depend on it, the Easter date also decides school spring breaks and long weekends in many countries.
A Short History
Early Christians disagreed over whether to celebrate the Resurrection on a fixed date or on a Sunday. The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD settled on a Sunday, and later church tables fixed the rule tied to the spring equinox and the lunar calendar. When Western churches adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1582, their Easter separated from that of the Orthodox churches, which still use the Julian calendar, so the two often fall on different Sundays.

Easter FAQ
What day of the week is Easter 2027?
Easter 2027 is on a Sunday: Sunday, March 28, 2027. The following year it falls on Sunday, April 16, 2028.
Why does Easter fall on a different date every year?
Easter follows the moon as well as the sun: it is the first Sunday after the church's full moon on or after March 21. Lunar months do not line up with the calendar year, so the date shifts between March 22 and April 25.
Is Orthodox Easter on the same day?
Sometimes, but usually not. Orthodox churches apply the same rule to the Julian calendar, so their Easter is often one to five weeks later.
Is Good Friday a holiday in the United States?
It is not a federal holiday, but the NYSE and Nasdaq close on Good Friday, and a few states give state employees the day off.
