About Spring
Astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere starts at the March equinox, when the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. It lands on March 19, 20 or 21 depending on the year and your time zone; the dates here use U.S. Eastern Time.
From this point on, days are longer than nights north of the equator until the September equinox.
A Short History
The March equinox has anchored calendars for millennia. Nowruz, the Persian New Year celebrated by hundreds of millions of people from Iran to Central Asia, begins at the exact moment of the equinox. The Christian date of Easter is also calculated from a fixed equinox of March 21. Thanks to the Gregorian leap-year rules, the equinox has crept earlier over the past century, and March 19 dates are becoming more common in the Americas.

Spring FAQ
What day of the week is Spring 2027?
Spring 2027 is on a Saturday: Saturday, March 20, 2027. The following year it falls on Sunday, March 19, 2028.
Are day and night exactly equal on the equinox?
Not quite. Because sunrise and sunset are measured from the top edge of the Sun and the atmosphere bends light, daytime is a few minutes longer than night on the equinox. The day with equal light and dark, the equilux, comes a few days earlier.
When does meteorological spring start?
On March 1. Meteorologists group the seasons into whole months, so spring is March, April and May.
Why can the first day of spring be March 19?
The equinox drifts about six hours later each year and jumps back with each leap day. In years when it happens late in the evening Universal Time, it is still March 19 in the Americas.
