About Thanksgiving
U.S. Thanksgiving is always the fourth Thursday of November, so it moves between November 22 and November 28 from year to year. Because it is tied to a weekday, it always creates a four-day weekend for anyone who also gets Friday off.
It is also the busiest travel period of the American year, which is why many people start counting down weeks ahead to book flights and plan the meal.
A Short History
The holiday traces back to a 1621 harvest feast shared by the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag people. Days of thanksgiving were declared irregularly after that, until Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November in 1863. In 1939 Franklin D. Roosevelt moved it a week earlier to lengthen the holiday shopping season, a change critics nicknamed "Franksgiving". Congress settled the matter in 1941 by fixing the date on the fourth Thursday of November, starting in 1942.
