A Short History
The Continental Congress voted for independence from Britain on July 2, 1776, and John Adams predicted that July 2 would be celebrated for generations. Two days later, on July 4, Congress adopted the final text of the Declaration of Independence, and that date stuck. Congress made July 4 an unpaid federal holiday in 1870 and a paid one in 1941. By a famous coincidence, Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary.
