About Summer
Astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere begins at the June solstice, when the Sun reaches its northernmost point in the sky. Depending on the year and your time zone, that happens on June 20 or June 21; the dates on this page use U.S. Eastern Time.
Meteorologists use a simpler rule and start summer on June 1, so you may see both dates quoted.
A Short History
The June solstice brings the longest day of the year north of the equator and the shortest south of it. People have tracked it for thousands of years: the sunrise lines up with the Heel Stone at Stonehenge, and Midsummer is still one of the biggest celebrations in Sweden and Finland. Because Earth's orbit and our leap-year calendar do not line up exactly, the solstice drifts by about six hours each year and resets every leap year.
